Stray Thoughts about Electricity in Texas on a Hot August Day

When a single coal plant goes down in August the price point pain for utilities is real.

"The Sandy Creek power plant in Waco, TX tripped offline Friday afternoon, (August 2) causing real-time power prices to jump from $46.84 to $219.88 at the ERCOT North Hub in a manner of 15 minutes. The 5min LMPs from ERCOT's SCED run were as high as $395 during the event."

Takeaway: It pays to invest in power systems that don't trip up in August.

Does renewable power make A. E. GM Larry Weis uncomfortable?

The new wind contracts city council signed this month make doubled the city's wind capacity. The paper's response: "The new wind farms would make Austin Energy among the nation’s greenest utilities by most estimates." What does the GM think about reaching the 2020 renewables goal of 35 percent renewables seven years early? "Austin Energy General Manager Larry Weis said the utility’s costs would dip slightly by investing in the wind farms. “We’re just trying to take advantage of these wind opportunities while the prices are so attractive,” Weis said. Hum. Just about the price. No other considerations. How about going beyond the 35 percent percent goal? Your thoughts Larry? “I don’t think there’s any problem, if it’s affordable, to be going over 35 percent,” Weis said.

Takeaway: Reliability and rates are all the matter. Perhaps Larry Weis would make a good Texas PUC board member.
